Students’ Perspectives on Dual Enrollment at Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCATs)
- By Nicole Mader, Stone Dawson
Key Findings
-
Many students currently enrolled in TCATs were not aware of TCAT dual enrollment or its benefits to their future plans while in high school. Transportation, enrollment, and costs were also among reasons cited for the lack of enrollment during high school.
-
Most respondents who enrolled in TCAT dual enrollment learned of the courses from adults who worked at or visited their high school. Course content, teaching methods, and feelings toward instructors contributed most to their decision to enroll.
-
Most respondents reported receiving support during enrollment, and about a third reported some difficulties with the enrollment process.
-
Students who participated in TCAT dual enrollment courses reported having opportunities for hands on learning in class, little difficulty meeting coursework requirements, and gaining positive self awareness.
-
Many students who participated in TCAT dual enrollment reported meeting milestones toward their education and career goals, and most plan to seek full-time employment or continue their educations after completing their current TCAT programs.
